Benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina victims

Wellington Town Hall will host the Hurricane Katrina Relief Concert – A celebration of New Orleans and Delta Culture at 6pm on Saturday 1 October.

“Wellingtonians have been very keen to do something to help. This is an opportunity for people to donate and at the same time celebrate the culture and music of New Orleans,” said organiser Lisa Long

The line-up of entertainment includes a diverse range of talent, including the Massey University BIG BAND (director Roger Fox), De Ja Blue performing with Pearl vocalist Shelley Hirini, The Darren Watson Band, The Richard Klein Trio, Mon Ami, popular jazz singer Marg Layton, plus the thirty member Capital Gospel Show. Other entertainers are still to be confirmed and will be announced shortly.

All profits will be donated to the New Zealand Red Cross for the benefit of those suffering the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina.

“There is still a huge need for emergency food, medical supplies and tents for the homeless. This is a great example of generosity by Wellingtonians,” says Ken Birdling, Wellington Area Manager for the Red Cross.

Tickets for the concert can be purchased through Ticketek online at http://premier.ticketek.co.nz/. The cost is $25 per ticket. Tickets will be sold at the door, unless the event is sold out prior. The event is sponsored by Wellington City Council.

The concert is being organised by New Zealand Cares, a group of Wellingtonians comprised of both New Zealanders and Americans who have come together to organise and promote this concert on behalf of the Red Cross.
