WOWSER:

Nelson is facing its first spring in a decade without the World of WearableArt Awards. Meanwhile Wellington is expecting 12,000 extra people to attend the WOW shows at the Events Centre over the next two weekends. So, a bunch of Nelson artists and designers are bringing their wares to the Capital, and Julie Hill heads to Nelson to find out what’s going to fill the gap.

THEN WE’LL TAKE BERLIN:

Josie McNaught walks the streets of Berlin with a collection of New Zealand writers who’ve based themselves there while they can still find cheap and funky pockets of artistic communities. Sarah Quigley, Tim Corballis and Ingrid Horrocks all weigh in on the expectations placed on expats.

TREADING THE BOARDS:

This is the time of year when professional theatres around the country are signing off on their programmes for 2006, so we thought it a good time to scrutinise what’s working and what’s not on the nation’s stages. Cathy Downes is soon to move from Christchurch’s Court Theatre to Wellington’s Downstage, and Oliver Driver talks to the veteran actor/director about what’s working, what’s not and how regional differences affect staging decisions in New Zealand theatre.

GROWTH SPURT:

Manukau City’s Botanic Gardens are the perfect setting for a sculpture exhibition. Luckily, a local noticed this and “Growth Industry” is the result: an eclectic show featuring names like Greer Twiss, Jeff Thomson and Richard Cooper. It’s on until October 1st but if you don’t live in Auckland, see it on Frontseat.

Coming up on future Frontseats: New Zealand’s major arts patrons; art life in Palmerston North; British playwrighting legend Alan Bennett; and much, much more!

Best regards,

The Frontseat Team
