Memories of Sustenance, an exhibition

Kia ora

The Studio Gallery presents:

Memories of Sustenance, an exhibition of cast glass & mixed media by SUSAN K. LOUIE.

Opening Monday 3 October, 6-8 pm.

This exhibition focuses on Susan's memories as a Chinese girl brought up in “Manutuke”, a predominantly Maori suburb on the East Coast. It is about life - being raised and working in a market garden. It is a reflection about abundance. A gentle reminder of where we’ve come from- for Susan, this is about the land her parents acquired and on which they built a life and provided the family with a livelihood.

Whereas Susan's previous glass works have predominantly been based around simple forms and relief which convey and capture a sense of straightforwardness, her work in Memories of Sustenance is more complex, capturing memories of lotus root soup, pak choi being preserved on the fence, the cutting of cabbages from the garden rows and the packing of them into five star crates, sitting on apple boxes on the porch, looking out to the land; and of celebrations - from the giving of the moon cakes, to the roasting, cooking and sharing of sustenance.
