Wellington – Pamela Anderson is doing it. P!nk is doing it. So are Tommy Lee and Gwen Stefani. And now, Wellington resident Pandie is doing it too – “pleathering” herself, that is. The 19-year-old knockout is a finalist in PETA’s international “I’m Too Sexy for Leather” online photo contest, featuring luscious ladies in latex who prove beyond a doubt that you can dress to kill without harming a hair on an animal’s back. The grand prize is the winner’s choice of fabulous faux leather duds from leading punk, latex and pleather fashion house Lip Service.

Pandie shocked her parents when she decided to go vegetarian at age 12. Pandie says that the horror her parents felt could not begin to compare to the horror that animals face every day in factory farms. She has been a vegetarian ever since. Currently studying film, media and marketing, Pandie aspires to be a model and spends much of her time on both sides of the camera.

PETA’s free “Shopping Guide to Compassionate Clothing” makes it a cinch for those who want in on synthetic skins. Available at CowsAreCool.com, the guide details the latest on “divinyl” fashions, accessories and state-of-the-art sports equipment from companies such as Puma, Paul Frank and Diesel. Pleather has become so popular that the word has been added to the latest edition of Webster’s dictionary.

Why is PETA so gung ho about giving leather the heave-ho? Leather production causes tremendous animal suffering and is devastating to the environment and human health. Millions of cows, pigs, sheep and goats are castrated, branded and dehorned and have their tails cut off – all without painkillers. At abattoirs, they are hung upside-down and bled to death, and many are dismembered while they are still conscious.

“With so many stylish, cruelty-free alternatives available, it’s time to move away from leather and leave the hides behind”, says Pandie.

The entire bevy of vinyl-clad vixens can be viewed – and voted for – on PETA’s Web site CowsAreCool.com. Vote For Pandie at this link… www.cowsarecool.com
