Nelson scores in finals of NZ Radio Awards

Nelson's 93 More FM is once again in the finals of the New Zealand Radio Awards, the definitive benchmark for the whole New Zealand broadcasting industry.

Last year Nelson's More FM won Station of the Year for the regional section, as it did in 2003. Yesterday the station was named as one of three finalists in this section again - the fifth year in a row it has made the finals.

Station Manager Phillipa Pattison said the finalists were selected on the basis of programme, revenue, community involvement and ratings.

"Being named as a finalist for five years in a row is a real testimony to our staff and to the people of Nelson who consistently give us their support, both as clients and as listeners," she said. "We put together a great entry that highlighted events from the past year, such as our fundraising for the playground at Nelson Hospital and for the hospice Spring Fling charity ball."

More FM is up for a second award, with Marie Baker in the finals for the regional/provincial salesperson of the year.

"Marie is one of our longest serving members of the sales team and has a great relationship with her clients, evidenced by her 100% client retention," Ms Pattison said. "In a local economic climate that's been tough she managed to achieve her targets and generate new business."

Kent and Bundy from Nelson's Classic Hits and Matt Lawrey from the local access station Fresh FM are also finalists in the New Zealand Radio Awards.

"The success of the stations in the Nelson-Tasman region is evidence of the excellent broadcasters attracted to live here, as well as the effectiveness of a competitive media environment in keeping people on their toes. Nelson listeners are very well served in music, information and entertainment," Ms Pattison said.

The New Zealand Radio Awards winners will be announced at broadcastings' gala event of the year, a black tie dinner at the Auckland Sky City Theatre on Saturday 29th April.
