Second Round Of Outward Sound Grants Announced

The Outward Sound scheme, launched by the NZ Music Industry Commission (NZMIC) in December 2005 was established to provide assistance for international market development initiatives. Following on from the first recipients of Outward Sound grants in February of this year, the NZMIC is pleased to announce the successful applicants in Round Two.

Phase Three grants have been allocated to both LOOP Recordings and Bic Runga in this round. LOOP will be establishing a US office to market and sell their existing catalogue of over 30 releases to the wider North American market. Bic Runga will relocate with her band to the UK for the northern summer and commence in-market activity for the release of her album ‘Birds’ in the UK and Ireland. This will include a 30-date tour and performances at some major summer festivals.

Phase Two grants, providing the opportunity for in-market performances and related business development, were awarded to The Checks (for the UK), Elemeno P (for Australia), and Tardus Music representing Minuit (also for Australia).

And finally, Phase One market scoping grants have been allocated to Moana and the Tribe (UK/Europe/Russia), Goldenhorse (Europe/UK), Handmade Records representing Chong Nee (Australia), and Mai Music representing Katchafire (USA).

Between the nine successful applicants a total of $225.139.08 has been allocated, with the recipients required to match this on a dollar-for-dollar basis.
Phase One grants reimburse up to 50% of costs up to $10,000 for representatives or artists to undertake international market-scoping visits; Phase Two grants reimburse up to 50% of the costs up to $30,000 for in-market visits by export ready artists and related business professionals, including showcases and tour support; and Phase Three reimburses up to 50% of costs for maintaining a presence in a territory for an extended period where there is potential high level success - to a maximum of $60,000.
