A 17 year old from Whangamata has been crowned Miss Matarangi today in front of a crowd of more than 2,000 people at Matarangi Beach.

It was standing room only for the crowd that packed The Village Green to see the contest which is now in its second year. The competition attracted a higher than expected number of entries with 75 girls entered in the 7 - 11 year old girls category and about 50 boys in the same age group.

Sharma Slavich of Whangamata beat off competition from about a dozen contestants to take the main title, ahead of runners up Tracey McGregor of Auckland and Sarah Palmer of Matarangi.

The judging panel included local representatives as well as celebrity judges Marc Ellis, singer Donald Reid and television host Phil Keoghan.

General Manager of Matarangi Beach Estates, Alan Copeman, says all were impressed by the courage and good spirit of the contestants and noted that it was great to see many locals in amongst the holiday-makers parading in their togs and beach wear at The Village Green.

Mr Copeman says, "The inaugural event set a high standard last year but this year was even bigger and better. The crowds were also really supportive of the entrants which made for a great atmosphere."
