Eade to carry flag as Team NZ Captain at Youth Olympics

One of the country's most promising young oarsmen has been named Team Captain and flag bearer for the New Zealand team at the Youth Olympics Festival in Sydney, Australia.

Chef de Mission and former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Nigel Avery named Auckland rower David Eade as the young Kiwi who will have the honour of carrying the flag and leading his country at the opening ceremony of the Festival. Eade, from Auckland, was stroke of the New Zealand Junior Eight that won gold at last year’s world championships.

“There are some outstanding young leaders in the various sports but David stood out as a superb sportsman who embodies the real spirit of the Olympic movement,” explained Avery.

The event - which takes place over three days this weekend - is an official Olympic event and attracts more than 1,500 athletes from around 30 nations to compete in all of the major Olympic sports. It represents a real challenge for rowing teams as each squad of eight men and eight women must race three times - all in the eight and then in two further events from the coxless four, the single, double and quad sculls.
