Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir Visits NZ

Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir Visits New Zealand April 23 – May 7 2007

Placed by Le Figaro alongside the Vienna Boys Choir and that of Kings College, Cambridge as one of the finest in Europe, the Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir presents its first concert tour in New Zealand.

The choir presents the concert: Songs of the Cherubs - European choral music from the end of the 19th century. Tchaikovsky, Liszt, Lange-Müller and Nielsen. The programme takes its name from the Cherubical Hymns of Tchaikovsky, a main feature in the concert. It links the musical environments of Copenhagen and St.

Petersburg at a time when the courts of the Danish King and the Russian Zar, including their attached Chapel Choirs, and the interrelation between these had great cultural importance in Northern Europe. In addition the choir brings to New Zealand the music of the recognized Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). Nielsen played a crucial role in the founding of the Copenhagen Choir School, where the Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir resides, in 1929.

Today Copenhagen Royal Chapel Choir has the privilege to perform in connection with the Danish Royal Family's major festivities, recently at the wedding of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark in 2004 and at the baptism of their firstborn, Prins Christian in 2005. In relation to these activities the choir also participated in the Reburial of Russian Empress Maria Fjodorovna (born Danish Princess Dagmar) in St. Petersburg in September 2006 in the attendance of the Danish Crown Prince Couple.
