‘How much better is a man than a sheep?’ Gregor Kregar’s absurdist suite of works Matthew 12:12 explores the Holy Bible verse of the same name during Telecom Prospect 2007. A live sculptural installation of Matthew 12:12 takes place from Friday until Sunday in Civic Square, with twelve sheep in brightly coloured, 100% New Zealand woolly jumpers grazing within white picket-fence enclosures. On Saturday Gregor Kregar talks about the evolution of the Matthew 12:12 project and the ideas behind it, as well as his broader practice.

Matthew 12:12 has a range of manifestations in different spaces during Telecom Prospect 2007Prospect.Besides the live installation in Civic Square this weekend, a set of twelve photographic portraits of sheep, taken during an earlier staging of the work, are sited inside the gallery and are joined by a video work playing in Square" (until 15 April 2007).
The work grew out of the artist’s consideration of the way industrial rearing of livestock has shaped the landscape, and to a certain extent the culture, of Aotearoa. These woolly creatures are a mainstay of our economy and play a prominent role in our public cultural identity. When the work was developed New Zealand’s people-to- sheep ratio was 1:12.
