Racing commences at Hyundai YouthSail 07 regatta

Date released: 12 April 2007
From: Jodie Bakewell-White

Racing commences at Hyundai YouthSail 07 regatta

Racing got underway today in New Zealand's premier youth sailing event; Hyundai YouthSail 07. Blustery conditions resulted in postponements this morning, however the winds dropped below the allowable limit in the early afternoon, for the event which is being sailed on Wellington harbour.

Despite the late start the double-handed and single-handed fleets all sailed three races, while four races were sailed in the RS:X windsurfing. Racing was fast and furious and provisional results are in.

The day belonged to Wellington local Josh Junior in the Laser class who commenced the regatta with three straight wins. Junior was top youth sailor at both the ISAF Grade 1 Sail Auckland regatta and the New Zealand Laser Nationals Championships this year where he was third in the 39-strong open fleet.

Also racing out to an early lead is Josh Nixon in the boy's RS:X windsurfing. Nixon, from Takapuna Boating Club in Auckland recorded three wins and a fourth placing in today's four races.

Hyundai YouthSail 07 is the final and most important regatta to count for selection into the NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team 2007. This national team will be announced late next week and will travel to represent New Zealand at the youth world championships in Canada in July.

Up to twelve races will be sailed in each of the classes. The regatta is planned to finish Saturday, however Sunday is set aside as a reserve day and may be used for racing if required.
