New Zealand’s 100 Favourite Movies announced

13th June 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE;

New Zealand’s 100 Favourite Movies announced.

Over five thousand votes have been cast during the last two months on Flicks.co.nz - from the Prime Minister to Mr & Mrs Joe Bloggs – to find NZ’s Favourite Movies Ever. Now, the polls are closed and the results are tallied.

Always ones to root for the underdog, New Zealander’s favourite movie is 1994’s The Shawshank Redemption. The Stephen King prison bound story follows a wrongly imprisoned inmate, is directed by Frank Darabont, and stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.

With exceptional taste, New Zealanders have picked the following as their top ten:

1. The Shawshank Redemption

2. Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope

3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

4. Pulp Fiction

5. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

6. Fight Club

7. Donnie Darko

8. Amelie

9. Little Miss Sunshine

10. The Princess Bride

To see the full list of 100, go to www.flicks.co.nz

The filmmakers to dominate the list are Peter Jackson, Steven Spielberg & Stanley Kubrick – each with 4 films making the top 100. Nine out of the top 100 are made in NZ.

And New Zealand’s most hated movie ever? This list is full of over-exposed epics, gore-filled horror films and spoofs.

Perhaps tall poppy syndrome lives on in New Zealand – our most hated film is also the world’s highest grossing: 1997’s Titanic. The only non-American film to make this list is a New Zealand entry: 2007’s Black Sheep at number 15.
