Auckland Museum celebrates the Franklin district

The history and development of Franklin is explored in pictorial exhibition Celebrate Franklin. Auckland Museum has curated a pictorial exhibition Celebrate Franklin to open the district's new civic building Franklin: The Centre on June 30.

Celebrate Franklin includes over 60 works from Auckland Museum's extensive pictorial collection with work from iconic photographers Robin Morrison and James Siers and the historical works of John Johnson, John Kinder and M Higginson.

The exhibition also includes work by Franklin's own esteemed photographers Joy Scott, Aliah Jan and Jan Meiklejohn.

The exhibition acknowledges the rich history of the Franklin district and its outstanding contribution the country's agriculture and textile industry as well as our cultural and sporting landscape.

The district has been home to many celebrated personalities including world renowned explorer Sir Edmund Hillary, Weta Workshop's Oscar winner Richard Taylor, choreographer Douglas Wright and racecar driver Possum Bourne - all of whom are featured in the exhibition.

Franklin is the first participant in Auckland Museum's regional touring initiative that will see the Museum take mainly pictorial exhibitions to civic centres throughout the wider Auckland region.

The Franklin Centre's new art gallery will house these works that open to the public as part of the centre's grand opening party on Saturday June 30th.

A visual celebration of the history and development of the region, Celebrate Franklin gives Auckland Museum the opportunity to share their collection with the people of Franklin and help make them aware of the immense pictorial heritage of their region.
