Our first birthday in 2006 saw over 20 acts play on 2 stages in 1 venue over a day and into the next. Around 500 people witnessed and loved the best contemporary Dunedin music ranging from hip hop to country, folk to punk. The atmosphere was intense and intoxicating so it should come as no surprise that it’s happening all over again. Now that we’re a toddler, we thought we’d better show off a bit by recording the whole damn lot of it!

Our second birthday on the 11th of August is happening at the Refuel bar on the Otago University campus from 2pm and consists primarily of non-stop music until 2am. We have some of the very best from established Dunedin acts as well as some of the most exciting recently emerging acts.

Like last year there will be two separate shows - an alcohol-free, all-ages event in the afternoon and an R18 party starting in the early evening and carrying on into the wee small hours.

As alluded to above, this year has a twist. The entire event will be professionally recorded and the best of the event will be immortalised on our fifth compilation, to be released later on in the year. If we could shout it from our rooftops we would - it’s got us that worked up. You'll definitely be hearing more from us!

BACKGROUND

Dunedinmusic.com was established in 2005 with the aim of being a hub for Dunedin’s music industry and musicians as well as promoting the city’s exploding music scene.

Since our inception we have collected the city’s artists and venues in a coherent database, listed thousands of gigs, staged and supported a handful of successful music events and released four compilations of locally made music, showcasing Dunedin’s top acts to the rest of the country.

This year we opened our online store, selling locally produced music and merchandise including albums from The Chills, David Kilgour, Gestalt Switch, The Tweeks, Onanon, Delgirl and many more. The list grows every week!

The public has been hugely supportive and encouraging. In two years we’ve collected nearly a thousand registered users who have posted over 20,000 comments, helping various members of the scene to network and create synergy in our music culture.

We’ve also received some extremely good feedback from the artists, the industry and the media over the last couple of years and with many other developments in the pipeline this will continue into the next year and beyond.
