Desperate Housesurgeons To Help Heart Foundation

If you’re a Desperate Housewives fan, make sure you get along to the University of Auckland Medical School Desperate Housesurgeons Med Revue this month. The two hour revue will be staged at the Maidment Theatre and includes skits, songs, dance, parodies and more.

The Auckland Medical School Revue has a history of over twenty years, longer than some of the faculty staff care to remember! Recent revue themes have included ‘Club Medic: Uncovered’ for Muscular Dystrophy NZ, ‘Dude where’s my spleen?’ for the Child Cancer Foundation and ‘Incision impossible’ for St John Ambulance.

This year a campus vote selected the National Heart Foundation of New Zealand as the Med Revue’s recipient charity. The Heart Foundation is the charity that leads the fight for heart health for all New Zealanders. Funds raised will help promote heart health and reduce the suffering and early loss of life from heart disease through funding vital heart research, promoting healthy lifestyles and advancing cardiac rehabilitation.

“Heart health is such an important factor in the overall health of New Zealanders. We believe that the National Heart Foundation’s variety of innovative approaches to raise awareness and tackle issues such as exercise, healthy eating and smoking deserves our support and involvement”, says Nicole Vogts, one of three directors of this year’s Med Revue.

All three directors are students at the University of Auckland’s Medical School and have strong interests and backgrounds in music and the performing arts. Director Tim Humphery says, “One of the first things we were told at the beginning of this year was to ‘get involved’ in the Medical School’s events - and so we did. So far it has been a very rewarding and enjoyable time.”

Major sponsors of the 2008 Med Revue include Merck, Sharpe and Dohme and ASB. Support has also been provided by Medical Assurance Society, Medical Books (NZ) Ltd, Auckland X-ray Services, Diagnostic Medlab, University Book Shop, Grafton Pharmacy and Excom.

Skits and acts in the revue will revolve around the heart health theme and aim to educate as well as entertain audiences. “The show is not just about raising money but raising awareness of some important issues at the centre of the nominated charity”, says director Nick Eaddy.
