NZ Affordable Art Show Sales 25% Up

The 2007 New Zealand Affordable Art show had a 25% sales increase compared to 2006 with sales of $802,000 compared to $646,000. More than 1,400 pieces of artwork were sold for an average price of $560.

Executive director Carla Russell said she was overwhelmed with the response to this year’s show, held over three days in Wellington.

“There seems to be a genuine demand for Kiwis to have a piece of locally produced art in their homes – affordability does not mean quality is compromised. We had more than 3500 artworks on sale by 833 artists from North Cape to Bluff, and their work was simply outstanding,” said Russell.

The show was started in Wellington in 2004 based on similar shows in London, New York and Sydney. Sales for the first year were $395,000, 2005 $493,000 and 2006 $646,000. Only 15% of the sale price is taken as commission – artists this year grossed more than $680,000.
