Krumping Pioneer Tours Kiwi Schools

The American creator of a worldwide dance phenomenon known as krumping, Thomas 'Tommy the Clown' Johnson, is taking his hip hop roadshow to Auckland and Wellington schools next week (Aug 20-24) as part of a tour organised by youth music station Mai FM.

Tommy is one of the pioneers of the engaging and high-energy krumping which forms a big part of his show - a combination of magic, dance, song and humour that educates young people about the importance of education.

He founded a hip hop clown academy that offered an alternative to gangs, and thousands of teenagers in America and around the world have competed in his 'Battlezone', a place where dancing crews pit their skills against other teams for the right to become a hip hop clown in an annual competition.

Tommy and his dance crew are scheduled to perform on:

Saturday 18 August Koroneihana, Ngaruawahia

Monday 20 August: Avondale Intermediate, Avondale, Auckland

Tuesday 21 August: Rosehill College, Papakura, Auckland 274 Youthcore, Otara, Auckland

Wednesday 22 August: Papatoetoe High School, Papatoetoe, Auckland

Thursday 23 August: Parliament Building visit Petone Central School, Petone, Wellington Naenae School, Naenae, Wellington Katrina Cummings Hip Hop Dance School, Wellington

Friday 24 August: Pomare Primary School, Wellington Tui Glen School, Stokes Valley, Wellington Pukeatua Primary School, Wellington

Mai FM was launched by Te Runanga o Ngati Whatua in 1992 and has established itself as the country's most successful commercial Maori radio broadcaster. As well as three youth music stations in Auckland, Rotorua and Whangarei, Mai Media Limited is also an umbrella company for record label Mai Music; music publisher Mai Publishing; and public relations division Mai Communications.
