Get the Lowdown on the Downloads at the Telecom Mobile Music Awards

Telecom NZ is pleased to announce the third annual Mobile Music awards.

The 2007 Telecom Mobile Music Awards recognise the achievements of musicians in the mobile music market and are being held at the Monte Cristo Room in Auckland on Wednesday, August 29.

The awards celebrate the rise of mobile music and recognise the number of full track downloads, Tru Tone Ring tones and Caller Tunes downloads that an artist has achieved over the previous 12 months.

The growth in the mobile music market has this year seen digital full track downloads for mobile included for the first time in the official count for the NZ Music chart. The Telecom Mobile Music Awards further acknowledges the strength of full track downloads Ring tones and Caller Tunes as a measure of an artist’s popularity.

Music is, and will continue to be, a crucial part of our customers’ mobile experience, said Telecom’s Head of Content Carolyn McKenzie.

“Customers not only want their music on the go, they want to be able to download it immediately, without the complication of computer cables and synchronizing their device. They expect music not only to be portable, but they want it on a device they can also use to talk, text, pay for parking, take pictures and shoot and watch videos,” said Ms McKenzie

Telecom launched its Music Store in December 2005 and the popularity of the service has grown considerably in the last year; so much so that full track downloads are now more popular than Ring tones and Caller Tunes. Telecom’s Music Store now has over 1.7 million tracks available for customers to choose and preview - over 7 million songs have been previewed by customers on their mobiles since the service launched.

Mobile Ring tones, Caller Tunes and the other associated artist properties are helping promote and distribute new artists and their music content more rapidly than we have ever seen before, said Mike Bradshaw of Sony BMG.

“I think these awards showcase a new and exciting part of a rapidly advancing and changing music business, where the consumer wants to be first, and by delivering desirable content in all its forms, how and when they want it, they will be,” said Mr Bradshaw.

GLOSSARY

Full Track: Full length singles and albums downloaded from the Telecom Music Store to mobile.

Tru Tone Ring tones: Music downloaded to act as your mobile’s ring, Tru Tones are an actual version of the song selected.

Caller Tunes: Caller Tunes change the ringing tone people hear when they ring you, so instead of hearing the standard ringing tone, they'll hear a song or sound before you answer your mobile.
