September is big month at Auckland Museum:

Dr Rodney Wilson, the Museum’s visionary Director retires after 13 years. During his tenure he oversaw a transformation that saw Auckland Museum become one of the best equipped of its size in the world - an international institution that attracts an international audience, and one of the country’s most visited attractions.

Taking over as Director is Dr Vanda Vitali, from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, California. Dr Vitali is the Vice President of Public Programmes and Director of Content Development at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. While Dr Vitali officially becomes Director on October 4 – however she will be at the Museum in the later part of September and will be at the openings of the Loli-pop exhibition and the two permanent galleries Ancient Worlds and Arts of Asia.
In addition there will be three openings this month: first up

Loli-pop on Friday September 14 then on Tuesday 18 September the two permanent galleries Ancient Worlds and Arts of Asia open. Finally – on Saturday 29 September – the opening of Darwin, the internationally acclaimed exhibition from the American Museum of Natural History.

Darwin

The Darwin exhibition has captured the imagination of journalists around the world : garnering the covers of Time, Newsweek and an entire issue of the award winning The Virginia Quarterly Review – proof that Darwin and his Theory is as interesting - and contentious - as it was in 1859.

The exhibition opens on Saturday 29 September. Mr Alan Draeger Associate Director or Travelling Programs from the American Natural History Museum is travelling with the exhibition and will be available for interviews the week prior.

Loli-pop

15 September 07 – 18 November 07

As most in the media are aware: the pulse of Asia beats strong in Auckland City. This was reflected in the 2006 census which identified 24% of Auckland residents as Asian, 31% of which fall into the age bracket of 15 – 29. This thriving youth culture has made its mark on fashion and art in Auckland’s downtown precinct.

Auckland Museum’s latest exhibition, Loli-Pop, explores one of the extreme edges of this culture: the Japanese Gothic Lolita phenomenon.

Extending the Museum’s World View
Two new galleries open at Auckland Museum

The rich world of arts and material culture that exists outside of New Zealand, increases its scope on September 19 when two new permanent galleries open at Auckland Museum. Ancient Worlds showcases the Museum’s fascinating collection of ancient artefacts and Arts of Asia gives a permanent home to its Asian decorative art and art collection – widely considered one of the finest and most comprehensive in New Zealand.

School Holidays

22 September - 7 October

Only 9 days and counting – Spring School holidays are almost with us and Auckland Museum has a raft of activity planned to keep the kids entranced and the parents sane.

Big favourite again will no doubt be the Night at Auckland Museum. These holidays the Museum has organised an exchange programme with the Melbourne Museum: They get our much loved dryosaur, Delaurus, and we are hosting their paravertebrae ankylosaur, Minmi, who was found in Australia at Minmi Crossing in Queensland. She evolved in the southern hemisphere and is quite different from northern ankylosaurs, with armour plating on the top and bottom to protect herself but no club at the end of her tail.

Another goodie is the Wacky World of Mr Darwin Show – a fun interactive show about the life of this great man and his lifelong obsession with bugs, worms and killer plants.

Spring Programme Guide / Listing Information

This season Auckland Museum hosts an exciting range of exhibitions, lectures, special events and activities for all ages. Included are a number of lectures relating to the Darwin exhibition as well as a decorative arts lecture series. Nuclear Free: Protest Photography by Gil Hanly coincides with the Armistice symposium and Exquisite ex Libris is one of the finest collections of bookplates in the Southern Hemisphere.
