WILD BEAST: The Art of Dean Buchanan

WILD BEAST: The Art of Dean Buchanan is a sumptuous book, detailing the long and varied career of prolific artist Dean Buchanan.

Bob Harvey has known Dean for over 20 years and many of the interviews have taken place at Dean's home in his beloved Karekare and in his bush studio. It's a magnificent setting, often reflected in Dean's paintings of the West Coast of Auckland. WILD BEAST documents his early works, his wonderful Alice in Wonderland series through to his current mountain paintings.

Dean is an avid mountaineer and regularly climbs Mt Taranaki and Ruapehu, has climbed Mt Aspiring and most recently reached the summit of Aoraki Mount Cook. This book is dedicated to Meguru Inoue, a young Japanese woman inspired by these majestic mountains, who was tragically killed two weeks after that climb.

Beautiful photographs are by Antoine Gasperini and a foreword by Warwick Roger, who says: 'I am proud to have had a small part in Bob producing this glorious book.' Warwick first commissioned Bob to write an article on Dean Buchanan for Metro magazine in the early 80's and a TV documentary followed in the Kaleidscope series.

The Art of Dean Buchanan

Bob Harvey

Dean Buchanan is one of New Zealand’s best-known artists. From an early age he showed immense talent, painting large oils that demonstrated both technical brilliance and a close affinity with the natural world. During the past thirty years he has become probably New Zealand’s most prolific (and also most affordable) painter, as well as one of the most instantly recognisable.

His paintings are found in homes throughout New Zealand, in public buildings and galleries both here and overseas. He has also exhibited in Australia, Japan, Chile, Switzerland and the USA.

Coupled with his creative talent is an ability to live life to the full. No shrinking violet, ‘Wild Beast’ Buchanan has always expressed himself forthrightly, especially in defence of preserving New Zealand’s natural environment. He has also become a mountaineer of some note, and in January 2007 succeeded in climbing Mt Cook. Bob Harvey interviewed Dean Buchanan extensively for this book, and describes every facet of his life. The book also includes 60 superb reproductions of some of his greatest paintings.

Bob Harvey is the Mayor of Waitakere City, Auckland, and a nationally known figure. Always keen to promote art and artists, he has known and admired Dean Buchanan for decades. Among Bob Harvey’s previous books are the best-selling Untamed Coast, Rolling Thunder, Westies and White Cloud, Silver Screen.
