Artists helping animals in New Zealand

Following the success of last year’s event, national animal advocacy organisation SAFE will host its fourth Charity Art Auction on 9th November at Hopetoun Alpha.

SAFE Bid! Charity Art Auction will be presented by actor Robyn Malcolm (Outrageous Fortune, Shortland Street) and run by auctioneers Hamish Coney and James Parkinson (Television One’s Auction House).

Karl Maugham, Peter Robinson, Joanna Braithwaite, Judy Darragh, Yuk King Tan, Jenny Dolezel and John Pule make up some of the high-calibre, talented New Zealand artists offering quality works to help raise funds for SAFE to help abused animals.

“We are delighted to have the support of so many high profile New Zealand artists,” says event organiser Amanda Sorrenson, who is thrilled with the standard of artworks available for auction. “A surprise overseas addition also joins the throng of New Zealand artists. Anthony Lepore, a very hip and contemporary New York photographer has submitted a work which we are particularly excited about.”

The majority of the artists have submitted works from their current works or practices. For example, John Pule’s use of the aesthetics and key concepts of Niuean tapa cloth, and Karl Maughan’s hyper-real painting of lush gardens and native flora. While the SAFE Bid! Charity Art Auction does not have a prescribed animal theme some of the artists have taken the cause to heart by submitting or creating contributions with an animal reference.

SAFE is the second largest animal advocacy organisation in New Zealand and is dedicated to promoting humane education. The money raised will go specifically towards the ‘Freedom for Pigs’ campaign, aimed at the plight of factory-farmed pigs in New Zealand.
