Marty's Guide

Marty's Guide

Most of us go to our grave with our music still inside of us!
Who’s got a skill, a whim, an urge or a quality? I say don’t delay, display it!  Have a go; you will feel fantastic. Last week I co-choreographed a dance to two of the latest Chemical Brothers tracks to hit the air-waves, “Salmon Dance” and “Battle Scars”; painted a successful acrylic on canvas painting, blagged my way into a very plush party and held a great meeting regarding my next party on December 1st. As a result of this, on top of what you are about to read, I had a pretty good week, and I trust you all did to. Read all about it in my weekly review…

We’ve got a bunch of new picture galleries on the website this week including Miss Lingere Model 2007 and the Sundown Dance party, both at Stonyridge. Click here to check them out.

Thumbs Up To
Miles Edwards and Steve Robertson won double passes to “First Class” at Asta last Saturday.
Nikki Wilkie, Carla Bennett, Beck Davies, Ed Collins, Toni-Marie Martin, Joanne Dryland, Amanda Claydon, Teneka Hydnman and Andrew Waite will all be partying with me big time at “Sleepless” this Saturday at SpyBar with VIP passes.
Andrew Medland and Steve Gillett won the “Sundown” tickets.
Krissy Moreau picked up the double pass to see a superb game of basketball last Thursday.

Wednesday October 24th
MacKenzie Thorpe - “One Night Only”
Audi Showroom, 42 – 46 Great South Rd, Newmarket
No Charge. 6 – 8pm

He’s internationally renowned and his works are incredibly sought after. Looking at some of his works you may be inclined to say “I could do that”; you’d be wrong. On closer inspection and thought you can see the detail and skill required. Thorpe doesn’t hide the fact that often life is a struggle, a dark tunnel that can seem endless. He passionately believes that our frail dreams are worth nurturing and that love and honesty will triumph over adversity. You have to meet this guy and see his work.

And/Or
The Summer Ale Launch Party
The Drake, 2 Drake St, Freemans Bay
No Charge. 4.30 – 7.30pm

The launch is at all Monteiths’ bars, but this is the one I’d pick. Great vibe, location and service. They are also putting on some fine free fare on the barbie for all; that’ll go sportingly with the Summer Ale.

Thursday October 25th
Chapel Bar & Bistro 2nd Birthday
147 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby
No Charge. 8pm sharp. Must RSVP to chapel.admin@xtra.co.nz

It’s been one of my favourite bars since it opened, now I have a chance to truly celebrate. It coincides with their LBD party. The first was super-successful, so this party will rock. They have top line sponsors and musical entertainment to boot; so I’ll see you there at 8?

And/Or
The Hootchy Kootchy Girls
The Classic, 321 Queen St, Auckland Central
Tickets $25 from Erin on 021743447, or on the door (if available). 8 – 11pm

They’ve performed many times in Auckland now and the show keeps improving. If you like something different then see this highly choreographed burlesque show. It’s a tasteful eye-opener.

Friday October 26th
Full Moon Party
Bungalow 8, Cnr Market Pl & Customs St W, Viaduct Harbour, Auckland Central
No Charge. 5pm – Late

On a Friday Bungalow is fun, attracting a wide variety of people throughout the night. When there’s a big bash on it’s even better. There are cheap drinks for Africa, and when you get one you’ll be given a fortune cookie (everyone’s a winner). DJ’s Bevan Keys, Nigel Love and Martin Marshall hit the decks from 9pm and don’t relent till the place is empty.

And/Or
Bombay Sapphire Glass Art Exhibition (closes Saturday Oct 27th)
Aveia Art Gallery, 20 Customs St E, Britomart, Downtown Auckland
No Charge. 10am – 6pm

Bombay Sapphire runs the world's largest international glass competition, now the exhibition is in NZ. There will be ten NZ pieces on display, and a selection of the best from around the globe, including an amazing array of Martini glasses.

And/Or
Diwali Festival Of Lights (begins)
Britomart East, Downtown Auckland
No Charge. 11am – 10pm
For the 6th time The Diwali Festival of Lights lights up Auckland. It brings all the colours, crafts, sounds and spicy aromas of India to those who may have never been, or want to relive old times.

Saturday 27th October
Sleepless Dance Party
SpyBar, 204 Quay St, Viaduct Harbour, Auckland Central
No Charge 10-11pm. $10 on the door after. 10pm – Very very late

See, feel, hear, experience SpyBar like never before. A new vibe comes to town. This is my first party here and I’m going all out. Complimentary Grey Goose vodka cocktails greet you till 12am, then the uplifting party sounds from General Lee, Geoff Parker and Grant Marshall take control. Everyone is welcome to this party, just dress to impress (bar-tabs to be won for those who make an effort), and be nice to the guys on the door.

And/Or
Carnage In The Cage
ASB Stadium, Kohimarama Rd (by Selwyn College), Kohimarama
Tickets $55 - $65 from www.ticketek.co.nz. 6 – 10pm

I can’t believe this is legal. The name says it all. Guys in a hexagonal cage go head-to-head in battle, there’s no make believe here. You’re bound to see a little blood and guts so beware. The fighting is unbelievable, the personalities are huge and the entertainment is second to none.

Sunday October 28th
Watch the Adidas Auckland 2007 Marathon LIVE
Around inner Auckland
No Charge. 7 – 11.30am

I’ll still be charging at Spy when these guys kick off but will be at the finish line in Victoria Park to welcome home the winners, and get some free Lucozade and sponsors products. It’s a fun morning for the whole family, as tremendous athletes try and break the course records for huge cash prizes. Then there are those that are just in it to finish. Big ups to all competitors. Prize giving is at 11.30am in Victoria Park.

And/Or
Manzone
Leisure Centre, 159 Brightside Rd, Stanmore Bay, North Auckland
Entry $10. 10am – 6pm

Hot rod displays, latest builds by Auto Colour Matrix, NZ V8 touring cars, Variety Bash Cars, V8 Race car simulator, trade displays, live music, bikes & boats, fishing & hunting, food & beer, technology, children's rides and entertainment, it’s all here. Worth a look I reckon, if only for the candy-floss.

Monday October 29th
Raw Comedy. Hosted by Irene Pink
321 Queen St, Auckland Central
Entry $5 on the door. 8 – 10.30pm

It’s a night for newbies. Quite often they are the funniest as they’re just being themselves, but also trying to be funnier than normal. Tonight’s host links it all together with wit and audience interaction, thus keeping you on your toes.

Tuesday October 30th
Get Quizzical
The Kingslander, 470 New North Rd, Kingsland
No Charge. 7.30 – 10pm

Muster up some friends and come along here for a nibble, pint and a laugh. It’s the busiest quiz night in Auckland so you’ll have to register by 7pm to be one of the 30 teams.
