Wellington Screen Production Industry Continues to Expand

The latest screen production figures released by Statistics New Zealand highlight the important contribution this sector makes to the Wellington economy.

The figures show that the New Zealand industry remained stable in 2006, with 2,052 businesses producing gross revenue of $2,542 million. These figures were down only slightly on the previous year.

“What is encouraging for Wellington is that while the number of businesses located in the rest of the country is decreasing, there was a significant increase in the number of businesses operating out of Wellington,” said Chamber CEO Charles Finny.

“The number of businesses located in all regions across the country decreased over the year except for Wellington which recorded an increase of 8.2%. Just under 29% of the country’s screen industry businesses are now located in Wellington.

“This apparent shift to Wellington is not surprising given the industry concentration that already exists here and it is in the interests of the region - the business and local government sector together - to continue to provide an environment conducive to its on-going development,” Mr Finny concluded.
