Divas Double

One has had more #1s here than any other female, while the other has had more hits here than anyone else bar Elton John. And this week both Mariah Carey and Madonna score new entries among the eight debuts on the Singles chart.

Together they're accountable for 89 hits in total, including 12 chart-toppers.
Taking the highest new entry spot, at #11, is Mariah's Touch My Body, the 39th hit for the just turned 38-year-old. The #1 Vision Of Love opened Mariah's account 18 years back in 1990, being the first of her seven penthouse dwellers.

Not far behind, Madonna (who's 50 in August) teams up with Justin Timberlake as 4 Minutes lands at #14. Maddy made #7 with her 1984 Holiday debut, and in fact it wasn't until her seventh single, Into The Groove, that she racked up the first of her five New Zealand #1s. 4 Minutes also gives Justin his 15th local charter.

Another One In The Bag

No sooner than Eddie Rayner, Tim Finn, Noel Crombie, Neil Finn and Nigel Griggs complete their New Zealand reunion tour then they score One Out Of The Bag, nabbing a #1 DVD filmed at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne last year.

This gives Split Enz their first ever chart-topping DVD and a sixth #1 overall here.
I Got You is their sole #1 single while the band's total of four chart-topping albums is still more than any other local act.

Digital Surprise

Another old / new hit single happens this week on the Singles chart as an 11-year-old track becomes the posthumous first hit for American singer Jeff Buckley who drowned in May 1997, aged 30.

Hallelujah, written by Leonard Cohen, is the track that early last month went #1 on iTunes and the Billboard's Hot Digital Songs in the US. And this week it's #22 here. In large part, the rekindled interest in the tune has been put down to it being featured on American Idol. After a contestant sang a version of the song, the judges went on to discuss Buckley’s version, calling it “possibly the best song ever recorded”.

There's a Buckley biopic, Mystery White Boy, due later in the year.

Last November digital sales threw up the first new / old hit as Led Zeppelin finally made the Singles chart with Stairway To Heaven for the first time, 34 years after its original release on album.
