Divas Double

One has had more #1s here than any other female, while the other has had more hits here than anyone else bar Elton John. And this week both Mariah Carey and Madonna score new entries among the eight debuts on the Singles chart.

Together they're accountable for 89 hits in total, including 12 chart-toppers.
Taking the highest new entry spot, at #11, is Mariah's Touch My Body, the 39th hit for the just turned 38-year-old. The #1 Vision Of Love opened Mariah's account 18 years back in 1990, being the first of her seven penthouse dwellers.

Not far behind, Madonna (who's 50 in August) teams up with Justin Timberlake as 4 Minutes lands at #14. Maddy made #7 with her 1984 Holiday debut, and in fact it wasn't until her seventh single, Into The Groove, that she racked up the first of her five New Zealand #1s. 4 Minutes also gives Justin his 15th local charter.

Another One In The Bag

No sooner than Eddie Rayner, Tim Finn, Noel Crombie, Neil Finn and Nigel Griggs complete their New Zealand reunion tour then they score One Out Of The Bag, nabbing a #1 DVD filmed at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne last year.

This gives Split Enz their first ever chart-topping DVD and a sixth #1 overall here.
I Got You is their sole #1 single while the band's total of four chart-topping albums is still more than any other local act.

Digital Surprise

Another old / new hit single happens this week on the Singles chart as an 11-year-old track becomes the posthumous first hit for American singer Jeff Buckley who drowned in May 1997, aged 30.

Hallelujah, written by Leonard Cohen, is the track that early last month went #1 on iTunes and the Billboard's Hot Digital Songs in the US. And this week it's #22 here. In large part, the rekindled interest in the tune has been put down to it being featured on American Idol. After a contestant sang a version of the song, the judges went on to discuss Buckley’s version, calling it “possibly the best song ever recorded”.

There's a Buckley biopic, Mystery White Boy, due later in the year.

Last November digital sales threw up the first new / old hit as Led Zeppelin finally made the Singles chart with Stairway To Heaven for the first time, 34 years after its original release on album.

#36 Baby Bash featuring T-Pain - What Is It?
It's been three years since Baby Bash last featured in the New Zealand Top 40 when he helped Frankie J out on the #4 Obsession. The year before that, in 2003, he had a #1 with his debut Suga Suga. Helped out here by T-Pain (who gains his 11th appearance) Ronald Bryant lands his third hit at #36 with What Is It?

#37 Gabriella Climi - Sweet About Me
Six of the new Singles hits this week are by females. Italo-Australian Gabriella Climi (Gab to her friends) places the lead single Sweet About Me, from her debut Lessons To Be Learned in at #37. She's touring her homeland as support to James Blunt in May.

#39 Fergie - Here I Come
Black Eyed Pea Fergie can lay claim an even half dozen hits from her #2 The Dutchess solo debut here as Here I Come lifts the tally by debuting at #39. It's up to #15 on the RadioScope100 on airplay as well.

#40 Duffy - Mercy
From the land of Tom Jones, Mary Hopkins and Shirley Bassey comes Welshwoman Amy Duffy who simply as Duffy opens in the anchor position with her first New Zealand hit, Mercy. It opened in the pole position in the UK where she scored the double with her Rockferry album. That set drops here next week.

The New Albums

#5 Panic! At The Disco - Pretty ODD
Sophomore "Pretty ODD" provides Las Vegas's Panic! At The Disco with their highest entry point and peak in the same week crashing in at #5. First NZ chartset "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out" opened at #36 making its #7 peak some 3 months later. The band fly back soon for a show.

#21 The Raconteurs - Consolers Of The Lonely
White Stripe Jack White and friends Brandon Benson, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler reunite for their second Raconteurs set, Consolers Of The Lonely, new at #21 this week. The set is virtually straight from the studio to the store. It arrives 23 months after their #12 Broken Boy Soldiers debut.

#40 Matt Costa - Unfamiliar Faces
Recent visitor and Jack Johnson support and buddy Matt Costa rounds out the trio of new albums entries in the anchor position as Unfamiliar Faces drops in at #40.
