Ballet Heads To Stewart Island For The First Time

A group of Royal New Zealand Ballet dancers are packing up their tutus and are preparing to perform pirouettes for Stewart Island residents this weekend.

It is the first time the ballet company has been to Stewart Island.

A lack of facilities means it is impossible to perform a full-scale production on the island so instead the dancers will present the company’s Day in the Life programme, which aims to give an insight into a typical day of an RNZB dancer.

Six dancers will run through a rehearsal from the company’s repertoire and will perform excerpts from Paquita and Equilibrium, giving the audience a taste of both classical and contemporary works.

Artistic director Gary Harris and the dancers will be on hand to answer questions after the performance, which will be held at the Stewart Island Community Centre. It is a koha-entry event and is open to the general public.

Also, education manager Stacey White will hold a workshop on Stewart Island with students from Half Moon Bay School on Friday afternoon.

The Company will then perform Day in the Life in Kerikeri in the Bay of Island on April 20.

Royal New Zealand Ballet presents Day in the Life:

Stewart Island Community Centre Stewart Island Sunday 13 April, 12pm

Kerikeri The Centre Bay of Islands Sunday 20 April, 12pm
