Gone West; Piha's Kauri Bushmen and the First World War - A Talk by Sandra Coney

Hear Sandra Coney share her insights into the lives of the men from the Piha Sawmill commemorated on the WW1 Roll of Honour at Lion Rock Piha, the centre of Anzac commemorations on the West Coast.

Sandra has been researching these men for the last four years and her findings throw light onto the workings and social networks of kauri milling - in industry that has made an indellible impact on on the Waitakere Ranges and from which the Ranges are only now recovering.

Sandra will outline the history of the Mill, show new photos of the Mill operation that she uncovered as part of her research, and tell the stories of some of the men on Lion Rock. For some of the men, their connection with the Waitakeres goes back to the earliest days of Pakeha settlement of the Ranges.

Please arrive early to secure your seat on:

Thursday, 8 May 2008, at 7.30pm

Free entry

Opening hours The gallery is open daily from 10am - 4.30pm, except Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day, Anzac Day morning and during exhibition installation. Admission is free thanks to the support of Waitakere City Council.
