Umbrella Trial At AMI Stadium

Media release for immediate use:

Umbrella Trial At AMI Stadium

A six-month trial allowing umbrellas to be used at AMI Stadium in Christchurch is underway.

The issue was raised after last weekend’s bad weather. Umbrellas haven’t been allowed because of safety issues and the risk of views being blocked by raised umbrellas.

As a result of feedback after last weekend’s Super 14 game, AMI Stadium manager Vbase has reviewed this long-standing policy.

The trial will take effect from now until the end of the Air NZ Cup competition in October. The trial will cease early if significant safety concerns emerge.

Chief executive Bryan Pearson says on a very wet night an umbrella does offer more protection and therefore comfort for guests walking to and from the stadium but also within the stadium for those in uncovered seating.

“A successful trial relies exclusively on the common sense of all stadium guests, ensuring that any use of umbrellas in the stadium is done so out of consideration for the safety and viewing of others.”

“It is expected that these safety and viewing considerations will naturally restrict the use of umbrellas at the stadium when attendance numbers are high, for example at the test match in June or Super 14 rugby finals later this month.”

Given the trial, plans for the previously announced umbrella check in service are on hold.
