Little Bushman meet the Auckland Philharmonia

May 2008

One night of true progression and orchestration

– Little Bushman meet the APO

The Auckland Philharmonia are proud to announce a collaboration with one of New Zealand’s most talented and creative bands, Little Bushman, taking place on Sunday, July 13 in the Great Hall of the Auckland Town Hall.

The evening will see the band perform songs from their two critically acclaimed albums – Onus of Sand and Pendulum – with a full orchestra, scored by John Psathas. Born in New Zealand of Greek heritage, Psathas is one of the country's most internationally acclaimed composers. He has worked with a plethora of artists and his collaboration between modern day prog rockers Little Bushman is one of his most exciting to date.

“(Little Bushman frontman) Warren Maxwell is so versatile and expressive a musician that it’s a treat to think of placing him in more lush musical environments; which is what the orchestra and the band together allow,” says Psathas. “Both of their commercial releases are brilliant, but they really articulate fully in a live setting. I’ve been to quite a few of their concerts and have been watching and transcribing concert footage in preparation. I cannot wait to hear the sound of this band with the APO in full force!”

Former-Trinity Roots member Maxwell is equally as enthusiastic: “to be given the opportunity to work with such an internationally renowned composer/arranger like John Psathas, is both incredible and intimidating at the same time!” he says. “His compositions are phenomenal and I’m looking forward to hearing how he is intending to explode our songs and feed them out to the different sections of the orchestra.”

The concert has been in the planning for over a year, and the APO are honoured to be involved in the Psathas/Little Bushman collaboration. “Warren is such an important figure in New Zealand music and has a background that encompasses so many genres,” says APO CEO Barbara Glaser. “Their music is also so expansive that the potential for orchestration is huge and that is incredibly exciting for us.”
