Awards For Jingle Jangle Morning
Two major New Zealand book prizes have been won in the past few days by a Christchurch Art Gallery publication celebrating the work of Bill Hammond - one of New Zealand’s most influential and sought-after contemporary artists.
“Jingle Jangle Morning” traces the career and work of Bill Hammond and features more than 60 colour plates of his work. Its design includes a poster-sized, fold-out dust jacket.
The publication was named winner of the illustrative category of the Montana New Zealand Book Awards on Monday night. This award came hard on the heels of the Book Publishers Association of New Zealand awards - where “Jingle Jangle Morning” won awards in the best cover and best illustrated categories; and then the ultimate - the best book award.
“This is quite simply a stunning book and it is very satisfying to see the Christchurch Art Gallery team receive the recognition so clearly deserved,” says Mayor Bob Parker.
The 220 page book was produced to complement last year’s Bill Hammond exhibition at Christchurch Art Gallery. It was designed by Canterbury artist and designer Aaron Beehre and features essays by Jennifer Hay (Christchurch Art Gallery Assistant Curator), Laurence Aberhart (artist), Chris Knox (musician) and Ron Brownson (Auckland Art Gallery Senior Curator). “Jingle Jangle Morning” was funded by Christchurch Art Gallery with the support of Creative New Zealand and assistance from Friends of Christchurch Art Gallery and Spectrum Print.
“New Zealand has seldom produced an artist with such a unique pictorial language as Bill Hammond and Christchurch Art Gallery was very pleased to stage such a successful exhibition of his work,” says Gallery Director Jenny Harper. “For an exhibition catalogue to receive this level of recognition is very rewarding and a tremendous tribute to the effort and energy of all who put so much into the project.”
The book is available from the shop at Christchurch Art Gallery, at a cost of $80.
