Play Fantasy Football with SKY Sport

You may never get the chance to own a professional football team, but SKY Sport is giving you the next best thing.

This week www.skysport.co.nz opens its first Fantasy A-League competition, based on the teams in the Hyundai A-League, the trans-Tasman showdown featuring pre-season performers Wellington Phoenix that starts on August 15.

It’s free to sign up at www.skysport.co.nz/fantasyaleague there are some fabulous prizes – including a trip for two to Brisbane – and it’s stacked with enough features to bring out the Sir Alex Ferguson in everyone.

You have $2million to buy your favourite 11 A-League players plucked from the eight teams. Each player is assigned a pre-determined Fantasy League dollar value and Fantasy points for scoring and conceding goals, depending on their on-field position.

Entries remain open throughout the A-League competition, but early-birds get the points jump on their online rivals and all those who sign on before August 14 go in the draw for a two-night trip for two to Brisbane, including flights and accommodation, to watch the Phoenix play in December.

The manager with the most points at the end of the season on February 28, 2009 wins a yet to be announced grand prize, while there are also monthly incentives of a Microsoft Xbox 360 and a FIFA World Cup 08 football game.

What’s more, you can also register your team in a mini-league with your mates and battle for monthly bragging rights and end-of-season goody bag prizes.

The www.skysport.co.nz website has a detailed breakdown on all the form and vital statistics to help with selections, but you can also opt for the Lucky Dip option and have the computer pick a line-up for you.

Don’t stress, however, if your star-studded line-up isn’t performing en-route. From August 14 you can transfer up to four players a month until January when you can sack up to 10 and start afresh in the final weeks.

New Phoenix signing David Mulligan is tipped as a popular midfield/defender choice for many Fantasy managers. The 26-year-old defender joins the Phoenix on a two-year deal after a long career in England, including two seasons with Scunthorpe in the Championship, one tier below the Premiership.

Mulligan is the eighth new face to join the Ricki Herbert-coached Phoenix, which scored an impressive recent 1-0 win over last year’s A-League minor premiers, Central Coast Mariners.
