Che Fu to battle Vector Wellington Orchestra

New Zealand hip hop legend Che Fu is squaring up to face the Vector Wellington Orchestra in a 'mock battle' for the ages.

The inaugural concert for the AMI Pop Star Series will feature Che Fu live in concert with the Vector Wellington Orchestra, September 13 2008 at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington. This will be the only New Zealand performance of this unique mix of musical cultures.

Che Fu needs hardly any introduction to music fans in New Zealand, from his early days with legendary funk band Supergroove to his seamless blend of Pacific-flavoured soul, funk and hip-hop in his successful solo career.

In 2002 Che Fu won ‘Top Male Vocalist’, ‘Single of the Year’ and ‘Album of the Year’. He continues to extend hip hop in a way that furthers the evolution of this vital art form.

Che Fu's most recent album, Beneath the Radar, featuring the hits 2D and Mock Battle, had award-winning music columnist Grant Smithies describing Che Fu as "one of the most significant and original artists working in Aotearoa today".

With the Vector Wellington Orchestra, Che Fu will further push the boundaries of the art of hip hop, combining his full live band, a DJ and the orchestra to reproduce some of Che Fu's greatest songs that have already left an indelible mark on New Zealand musical culture.

This performance is the first in a series of concerts designed by the Vector Wellington Orchestra and presented by AMI Insurance to expose new audiences to the power and grace of a full orchestra performing the finest modern music by some of New Zealand's finest musicians.

The next concert in the AMI Pop Star Series will feature Dave Dobbyn and will be held November 11 at the Michael Fowler Centre. Tickets for this unmissable performance are on sale through Ticketek.
