For Immediate Release

Pumping Quality From Lake Pupuke Into Auckland’s Culture

An outstanding array of theatre, music and educational programming awaits Auckland as North Shore’s historical venue The PumpHouse Theatre comes alive with an incredible launch week this October.

Kicking off on October 14 the launch week offers nightly performances from leading musicians including Nathan Haines, Goldenhorse, Anika Moa and Don McGlashan. The week concludes with an official launch party and performance on Saturday October 18 which offers a sneak peak as to what audiences and professionals can expect from the 2009 revamp; theatrical productions from the likes of Silo Theatre, Tim Bray Productions and Taki Rua with mentoring programmes for industry students, development seasons for NZ works and not forgetting the stunning EON redesign of the theatre foyer, and the original architecture of the building itself.

Having been used as a venue since 1977 and surviving a both a partial and a proposed full demolition, The PumpHouse has been the starting point for a number of coveted theatrical practitioners including Oliver Driver, Colin Moy and Development Manager for The PumpHouse Shelley Geenty.

Following the opening night powhiri, the evening’s MC’s Toni Potter (Shortland Street, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof) and Adam Gardiner (The Female of the Species, A Clockwork Orange) invite spectators into the hallowed surroundings of the building as Don McGlashan opens with three songs, highlighting the musical aspect of the upcoming season.

Tim Bray (Tim Bray Productions) will be introducing the innovative ‘Kids Subscription Season’ followed by Jonny Brugh (The Jacqui Brown Diaries, Sugar & Spice) discussing the development season in conjunction with ‘The 500 Club’ and Colin Moy announcing ‘The Annual Autumn Collection” – a six week season of three exceptional plays brought to the theatre in association with Wide Sky Productions; Strange Resting Places (Taki Rua), Mike and Virginia (The PumpHouse & Wide Sky Productions) and Rabbit (Silo Theatre).

North Shore City Mayor, The Right Honorable Andrew Williams will be presiding over the event and introducing one of the most successful and well known dramatists in New Zealand, Roger Hall, who will be discussing his upcoming work “The Roger Hall Pantomime”. A five minute excerpt from the pantomime which features Toni Potter and the Mayor himself precedes a final thank you from The PumpHouse General Manager Alison Reid before guests arrive for Jennifer Ward-Lealand’s ever-popular homage to Marlene Dietricht in Falling in Love Again.
