Brown trout country explored in new book

A photographic journey through some of the South Island’s most beautiful angling locations is on offer in the latest book published by Canterbury University Press.

A Stroll through Brown Trout Country features stunning photographs by Hokitika-based photographer Les Hill complemented by vivid descriptions of people, places and fish written by South Canterbury-based fly-fishing guide Graeme Marshall.

Taking in the amazingly varied landscapes and waterways of the South Island, the book is a celebration of the joint exploration of brown trout habitat by Mr Hill and Mr Marshall, who have been trout fishing companions for more than 30 years.

The book features images of anglers in action in such striking locations as Lake Hawea, the Ahuriri River, Lake Te Anau, the Matukituki River and the Clutha River as well as lesser known streams and waterways throughout the South – anywhere where brown trout can be found.

The authors say the book will appeal to both the active angler and the armchair enthusiast.

“What we’d like to emphasise in this book is that trout fishing isn’t so much about catching fish, but about the places you go to and the companionship on the river. We hope that experience comes through in this book,” says Mr Hill.

This is the fifth angling book Mr Hill and Mr Marshall have produced together and follows Stalking Trout (1985), Catching Trout (1991), Images of Silver (1993), and Stalking and Catching Trout (2005).
