Powerball Jackpot Continues To Set New Record

Powerball Jackpot Continues To Set New Record

The Powerball jackpot continues to set new records and is now worth an estimated $24 million in next week's draw, says NZ Lotteries' Chief Executive, Todd McLeay.

"This is the largest jackpot in the history of Powerball in New Zealand and we're delighted to be offering our players a chance at a record breaking $24 million for the first time," say Mr McLeay.

"If Powerball is won by a single player, it will be the biggest Powerball prize won in New Zealand - and will dramatically change the lives of the lucky winner," says Mr McLeay.

The largest combined Lotto Powerball prize won to date is $19,054,243, sold at Pak N Save New Plymouth for the 5 April 2008 draw, and the second biggest is $17,992,975 sold at Kaeo Four Square for 20 May 2006.

Five lucky players won $386,848 with Lotto First Division tonight. The winning tickets were sold at Lakeview Superette Milford in North Shore City, Civic Video Glenfield in North Shore City, Hilltop Superette in Parnell, Auckland, Brooklyn Pharmacy Ltd in Wellington and Pain and Kershaw in Martinborough.

The Strike Four jackpot was not struck this evening and jackpots to $400,000 next week.

Tonight's other big winner was Joanna and Ian Bourke from Christchurch who won $100,000 on Lotto's Winning Wheel. Joanne and Ian celebrated their winnings with their three daughters who travelled to Wellington for the draw.

Tonight's Winning Wheel ticket was sold at by Woolworths at Gull Henderson in Waitakere City with the serial number 132-30803249-20XX.

"Anyone who bought a ticket at any of these winning retailers should write their name on the back of the ticket and check it as soon as possible at any NZ Lotteries outlet," Mr McLeay says.

Powerball Facts:
The odds of winning Powerball are 1 in 38,383,800.

The largest-ever Powerball jackpot prize reached a massive $19.3 million in September 2003. As this was a 'Must Be Won' draw (before the maximum was raised to $30 million), and there were no First Division winners, the prize was split among the 14 Powerball Second Division winners, netting them $1,377,773 each.

The Powerball jackpot can go to $30 million before we call a must be won week this maximum was increased in December 2003 from the previous maximum of $15 million.
