Tribal Pride The Focus Of A 12-Hour Music Concert Aimed At Youth

As part of celebrations to commemorate 150 years of Kiingitanga, Waikato-Tainui will host a 12-hour music concert next year aimed at youth. Celebrations Project Manager Rahui Papa says the concert will bring some of Aotearoa’s top headline acts to the Waikato.

“It’s called the Tribal Pride Music Concert 2009”, said Mr Papa, “and although we are hoping to target youth, the concert is open to everyone young and old, Maaori and non-Maaori. We want to take this time to celebrate, educate, and raise public awareness. This is a celebration of tribal pride, and you’re invited.”

The Tribal Pride Music Concert 2009 will be held on Saturday 24 January at the Hopuhopu Sports Complex, Hopuhopu, Ngaruawahia.

Mr Papa says the concert is not-for-profit “which means ticket prices can be kept to a minimum to encourage surrounding communities and youth in particular, to come along and enjoy bands and artists that they might not otherwise be able to see locally.” He says it’s also an opportunity for musicians both local and national, to showcase their music talents.

“We’ve got some fantastic headline acts including Kora, Scribe, Katchafire, Nesian Mystik, Ardijah, House of Shem, Unity Pacific, Whirimako Black just to name a few. A number of DJs and smaller bands are also confirmed, and with Te Matatini competition only weeks away from the concert in early February, we are delighted some of our national kapa haka groups are keen to perform. There’ll be lots of entertainment, dancing, comedy, food stalls and much more.”

Gates open at 9am and the venue is preparing to cater for around 10,000 people. The stage is expected to go non-stop over 12 hours. Tickets are $50.00 for 17yrs+ and $30.00 for 5–16yrs, and can be purchased through www.ticketek.com, freephone 0800 Ticketek, or from participating Ticketek agents. Mr Papa says high profile celebrities from within the tribe will be invited to engage with youth throughout the day.

“Many organisations have come on board to help with the success of the event and we’re also inviting celebrities to interact with the youth by participating in some competitions and giveaways, and by delivering key messages in a wonderful, safe and friendly, drug, alcohol and gang free environment. “I’m really pleased so many are getting involved.”
