Mā Te Reo supports book research

Te Ahukaramū Charles Royal has recently published a new book - Te Ngākau: He Wānanga i te mātauranga, entirely in Māori. The book explores the ideas of three key thinkers - Hirini Moko Mead, Whatarangi Winiata and Te Maire Tau.

Te Ngākau is for speakers of te reo Māori and promotes te reo Māori use in less commonly spoken and published areas. As a language resource it is an exemplar of te reo use for learners and allows the more fluent the opportunity to engage in the ongoing vigorous discussion of Mātauranga (knowledge).

Mā Te Reo supported Te Ahukaramū with the initial research and the development of terminology. The project then evolved to publishing Te Ngākau. Mā Te Reo is a government funded programme administered by Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (Māori Language Commission) since 2001 to support projects, programmes and activities that contribute to local level Māori language regeneration.

“Mā Te Reo is the community face of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori and aims to support communities, hapū and iwi with language regeneration activities such as kura reo, wānanga reo, language programmes and classes, language resources (including information technology), events, promotion of te reo and language planning. Te Ahukaramū’s book provides a wonderful language resource for proficient and native speakers,” says Huhana Rokx, Chief Executive of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori.
