Battle Of The Sex Bombs

Press Release 16 February 2009

BATTLE OF THE SEX BOMBS

Will Simon Dallow finally be knocked from his perch as TV’s sexiest male? Do the viewing public prefer blonde bombshells to Westie chic and sophisticated redheads?

TV watchers can now decide in the TV Guide Best on the Box Awards, the largest people’s choice TV awards in the country, by voting for the Sexiest Woman and Sexiest Man on TV, as well as for winners in 23 other categories.

The shortlists in the two hotly contested categories span a range of men and women, from mature, confident and sophisticated to young, fresh and saucy.

Previous Sexiest Woman Robyn Malcolm (Cheryl West in Outrageous Fortune) is again among the nominees, as are Breakfast host Pippa Wetzell and One News presenter Bernadine Oliver-Kerby. They are joined by newcomers Hayley Holt (Dancing with the Stars), Samantha Hayes (Nightline) and Shavaughn Ruakere (Official Top 40 – C4).

TV One news reader and six-time Sexiest Man winner Simon Dallow is again among the nominees for the male award, as are former nominees Ben Mitchell (Shortland Street) and Antony Starr (Outrageous Fortune). They are joined by newcomers Tamati Coffey (Breakfast), Robbie Magasiva (Tagata Pasifika / Burying Brian) and Kirk Torrance (Outrageous Fortune).

It is now up to the viewing public to decide who is the hottest of them all, and all voters will go into the draw to win one of five Myfreeview Personal Video Recorders (PRV) valued at $1000 each. In last year’s competition in excess of 11,000 readers cast more than 250,000 votes across 25 categories for their favourite New Zealand TV personalities and shows.

TV Guide Editor Julie Eley says the Sexiest Woman competition is again likely to be a showdown between youthful beauty and mature, sassy sophistication, with women on the shortlist ranging in age from their mid-20s to their mid-40s.

“Kiwis have shown in previous choices, such as Robyn Malcolm, that they find maturity and sophistication highly desirable – will they do so again?” she asks.

“And having gone for quiet, intelligent good looks in the Sexiest Man category for many years, who knows if this year they will find Tamati Coffey’s youthful enthusiasm more of a drawcard than Simon Dallow’s quiet confidence?”

The 25 categories in the TV Guide Best on the Box Awards also include Best Actor, Best Actress, Best News Presenter, Rising Star and Funniest Person on TV. This includes two new categories - Best Variety Show and Best Game or Quiz Show - to recognise some of 2008’s newest arrivals such as New Zealand’s Got Talent, Stars in their Eyes and Who Wants to Be A Millionaire.

As with all Best On The Box Awards, the title of the Sexiest Man on TV will be decided by popular vote – with all television viewers able to register their choice. They can vote through forms in the February 12 and 19 issues of the TV Guide. Voting closes on March 6th at 5pm.

The winner of all of the TV Guide Best On The Box Awards will be announced in the March 19 issue of the magazine.
