Fringe Busking Blitz Hits Town!

The South Island’s top buskers are flooding into Dunedin this week to be part of the Dunedin Fringe Festival’ inaugural Busking Blitz.

The four hour event being held in the Octagon runs from midday until 4.00pm this Saturday the 28th. The Busking Blitz is a showcase of talented New Zealand street theatre practitioners who put their skills to the test, and sometimes their lives on the line, for the audience’s pleasure. The Busking Blitz will feature two stages: a non-stop busking pitch in the lower Octagon and a non-stop dance and cabaret stage in the upper Octagon. It is a day of full-on Fringe action and free-ish entertainment (the buskers are worth something!).

Identical twin duo The Twisty Twins from Christchurch will wow crowds with their TWIN-tastic acrobatics. Intertwining beauty strength, balance and grace both on the floor and in the sky, these are two of New Zealand’s best acrobalance practitioners. Daredevil sword swallower Slim Pickens (Melbourne) returns to Dunedin again with a new show, his straightjacket and his trusty (not rusty) sword. Also from Christchurch is Punk and Tina, a colourful and crazy clowning duo recently graduated from Circo Arts, the Christchurch circus school.

Keep an eye out for a roving robot on the loose in the Octagon. Pandemoniam Productions from Christchurch present Robot E’motion, two unidentified roving robots will attempt to beam you up to another world.

In between acts there will be the opportunity to attempt to ride the craziest bikes in the country. Arrowtown’s Bikes for Fun are back in town with their re-invented bicycles. It’s fun to try or just watch other’s try to ride these crazy machines.

Festival Director, Paul Smith said, “We’re aiming to turn the Octagon into a Fringe fun-park so don’t miss out. This is a great event for all ages and will be loads of fun.”
