Out Takes 2009: A Reel Queer Film Festival
New Zealand’s showcase of local and international queer cinema starts in Auckland on 21 May and will travel to Wellington, opening 28 May, and Christchurch, opening 4 June.
Out Takes 2009: A Reel Queer Film Festival brings the best recent feature films, short films and documentaries to our diverse queer communities, including the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, takatāpui and intersex communities. Out Takes films have strong queer characters and storylines and reflect queer lives authentically in ways that, often, mainstream films on general release here do not.
Out Takes 2009 is presented by a non-profit group of queer volunteers, Reel Queer.
Reel Queer has worked hard to fundraise since its last festival in 2007. Like many arts events the festival has had to reduce costs, but Out Takes 2009 organisers are confident this year’s film selection will be just what winter-weary queers, their friends and family need this May. Simon Fulton, the group’s chief programmer, says: “We’ve been able to pick the best queer films from the last two years and we’re thrilled with the quality and diversity of this year’s line-up”.
Festival programmes will be available from 1 May around town, at queer-friendly venues and businesses and on the festival website: http://www.outtakes.org.nz.
