Hannah Usurps Jackson

Michael Jackson relinquishes New Zealand’s #1 Albums crown to the Hannah Montana Movie Soundtrack this week as the final week of the July School Holidays gives the Miley Cyrus-led title the sales edge.

While Number Ones falls to #3, The Essential Michael Jackson hits an all-time #2 peak this week. New this week at #13, The Motown Years was originally planned as part of Tamla Motown’s 50th birthday celebrations featuring all of Jackson’s solo hits prior to Off The Wall plus his earlier Jackson Five hits. It’s just the second time in New Zealand chart history that Jackson has charted a Motown album. The previous Farewell My Summer Love made a lowly #50 for a single frame in 1984.

Michael continues to hold the top two spots on the DVD list, has six Top40 singles and six Top40 albums, including three Top 10ers, plus the combo Jacksons / Jackson Five Best Of as well.

New Kiwi On The Block

Ten months after his debut hit Blow Ya Mind, J.Williams crashes the Albums Chart at #5 with his first issue Young Love. It gives him dual highest new entry honours as the fourth hit single, Stand With You featuring older sister Lavina Williams, opens at #13.

An instore at The Warehouse Sylvia Park, along with multiple TV appearances (including Erin Simpson and Close Up) have helped put the icing on the cake for Joshua Elia Williams.

The 21 year-old Aucklander is a champion dancer as well as singer. His biggest hit, Ghetto Flower, spent three weeks at #5 and rebounds to #20 thanks to his current momentum.

#23 Gossip - Heavy Cross

Music For Men (#36 this week) is into its fourth week in the Albums Chart and gives

American three-piece indie rock band Gossip (Beth Ditto, Nathan Howdeshell and Hannah Blilie) a first hit in at #23.

#26 Daughtry - No Surprise

Chris Daughtry’s band, Daughtry, has double reason to be pleased this week. Their sophomore Leave This Town rockets 32 spots to give them a career high of #8, and this week lead single No Surprise (fresh at #26) lands them a fourth hit and first in two years.

#36 Pixie Lott - Mama Do

Eighteen-year-old English singer-songwriter, actress and dancer Pixie Lott brings her former UK #1 Mama Do into the New Zealand charts at #36 and scores her first hit here. The cut is lifted from her debut album Turn It Up due soon. Pixie is a nickname given by her mum when she was young. Her birth name is Victoria Louise Lott.

#24 The Dead Weather - Horehound

Playing around in White Stripes/Raconteurs main man Jack White’s Nashville studio saw the launch of The Dead Weather. Along with White is fellow Raconteur Jack Lawrence, Queens Of The Stone Age’s Dean Fertita and Alison Mosshart from The Kills who together are the band. Out of the box their first album, Horehound opens at #24 this week.
