Reserve a Place at The Great New Zealand Quiz Nite

16 October 2009

What better way to celebrate the success of New Zealand authors than to round up a bunch of friends and head to the local for a good old-fashioned pub quiz?

Elevate Bar & Restaurant, located at the south end of Colombo Street will be hosting The Great New Zealand Quiz Night next week, as part of New Zealand Book Month.

On Monday 19 October, the function room at Elevate will see teams battle it out through a series of general knowledge questions to win a selection of prizes supplied by sponsors Barrington Paper Plus.

The evening will be also be attended by special guest Martin Crump, son of best-selling New Zealand author Barry Crump. Martin is currently touring the country to promote the 50th anniversary of his father’s book, A Good Keen Man. Those who attend on Monday will have a chance to buy copies of the book, signed by Martin.

Organisers at Christchurch City Libraries are encouraging men to come along to the event by requesting each team includes at least one male participant.

“A Good Keen Man has been such a prominent book with male readers over the years and to celebrate this success, we want to encourage as many men as possible to come and take part in the quiz on Monday” says Libraries and Information Manager Carolyn Robertson.

Martin Crump says he’s looking forward to the quiz night and hopes it encourages more people to start reading.

"I still get men in their 50s & 60s coming up to me and telling me that Barry's books got them reading. They had never picked up a book before that.

"Just recently in Masterton, I had a 13 year old boy come along to an event who had read A Good Keen Man several times and had bought the new anniversary edition for me to sign. This is what it's all about - getting everyone reading" says Martin.

Teams must enter prior to the night and must include no more than four players per team.

The Great New Zealand Quiz Night is free to take part, and food and drink will be available to purchase on the night.

Head along to Elevate Bar and Restaurant, 2 Colombo Street, Cashmere on Monday 19 October from 7-9pm. Bookings are essential - phone 03 941 7923.

* There will also be a chance to hear readings from A Good Keen Man at Central Library on Friday 30 October from 12-2pm.

It’s easy to think of Malick films coming in pairs. In the 1970s: Badlands and Days of Heaven.
