National Concerto Competition Has Record Entries

The 43rd National Concerto Competition for classical musicians under 25 has attracted a record 51 entries from around New Zealand. “We are excited by the number and variety of instruments for this year’s competition” says NCC Manager Howard Harvey. “These include violins, flutes, oboe, horn, euphonium and more.” he says.


The preliminaries and semi-finals will be held at the Maurice Till Concert Hall (formerly the Heritage Chapel of the Music Centre) from December 9 – 11 before the discerning attention of adjudicators Vesa-Matti Leppänen , Concert Master with the NZSO, Bridget Douglas, Principal Flute with the NZSO, and Charmian Gadd, one of Australia’s most eminent musicians. This competition is highly regarded throughout New Zealand. Many former participants have forged successful careers both within New Zealand and internationally.


The 51 contestants will be whittled down to just six for the semi-finals which will be held at 7 pm on December 11 at the Maurice Till Concert Hall, Barbadoes Street. Three finalists will be selected to perform with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra at a showcase concert on Saturday March 13 2010 in the Douglas Lilburn Auditorium of the Christchurch Town Hall
