Early Christmas Present For 1000 Kiwi Children

Exhibition Early Christmas Present For 1000 Kiwi Children

1000 children throughout New Zealand have received brand new bikes and helmets as part of Variety – The Children’s Charity’s annual Bikes for Kids tour.

The charity conducted concurrent North and South Island tours distributing bikes, helmets and high visibility vests to role model children from selected low decile schools – a range of celebrities and VIPs were on hand at every location to help distribute the bikes.

“To celebrate our 20th anniversary in New Zealand, we have conducted our largest Bikes for Kids tour ever,” said Lorraine Taylor, CEO of Variety, which has distributed $11.7 million to sick, disabled and disadvantaged Kiwi kids since its inception in 1989.

Supported by The Warehouse, Avanti, McDonald’s, AMP Capital, New Zealand Post and the TR Group, the tour involves Variety volunteers travelling throughout the country presenting bikes, along with local celebrities, to children from Wellington, Masterton, Woodville, Palmerston North, Wanganui, Te Kuiti, Hamilton, Paeroa, Whangarei, Manukau, Auckland city, North Shore, Franklin district, Dunedin, Oamaru, Waimate, Timaru, Christchurch, Greymouth, Westport, Nelson, Moteuka, Blenheim and Picton.

“Our goal is to reward deserving children from low decile schools with, what is in many cases, their first-ever bike. This recognition not only benefits the child concerned, but provides an incentive for their peers to follow in their footsteps and become good school and community citizens”, says Ms Taylor.

Selected low decile schoola are asked to nominate children who are considered role models.

“Bikes for Kids”, now in its tenth year, forms a special part of Variety’s mobility programme, providing life enriching assistance to children with physical restrictions.
