This January, New Zealand blues fans will be treated to a unique double bill as cult American acoustic blues artist Charlie Parr appears in Auckland on Saturday January 30th with globetrotting UK / NZ blues band Storehouse, at Auckland’s Wine Cellar.

An astonishing and frenetic National Steel guitarist and banjo player, Parr is also an adept songwriter, casting fringe dwellers and eccentrics in his lyrics, miniature Raymond Carver-esque short stories. Combined with a stylish line in the repertoire of acoustic blues giants like Mississippi John Hurt, Parr’s concerts and six acclaimed CD’s have gained him fans including the artist Robert Crumb and fellow Duluth, Minnesotan’s, indie legends Low.

“Charlie Parr is one of the greatest musicians and human beings I know. So many country-blues artists are crippled with retroism and purism, but he has brought wonder and excitement to this music,” says Low’s Alan Sparhawk.

“Even Charlie’s foot coming down on the floor boards screams with more and soul and life than most anything – past or future.”

Parr is on tour through Australia and New Zealand, and will be appearing at the Wine Cellar with Auckland underground notoriety Storehouse, who have toured consistently in Europe and the United States since 2004. The NME has recently described frontman singer/guitarist Tom Rodwell as “Sheffield’s answer to Lightnin’ Hopkins”. With a bizarrely entertaining hybrid of obscure blues, slave-era spirituals and calypso, and with unconventional guests playing including marimba, tabla, and tuba, Storehouse have a devoted bohemian following. Rodwell has been profiled by the BBC, Radio NZ and Sound on Sound for his recording project involving the original medium of sound, the wax cylinder.

“This is a great double bill for blues fans,” says Rodwell. “It’s rare for blues concerts here to feature someone of Parr’s calibre and distinctiveness, and Storehouse are pleased to be able to offer something different on the menu too. We guarantee the night will push your buttons.”

Charlie Parr’s song “1922” was used in a May 2008 television ad for mobile phone company Vodafone in New Zealand and Australia.
