Onehunga Community Festival To Go Ahead

Onehunga Community Festival To Go Ahead

Ports of Auckland to lift financial support

A full-strength Onehunga Community Festival will go ahead on Saturday 20 March 2010, thanks to sponsor Ports of Auckland.

The popular festival is enjoyed by around 7,000 thousand people each year.

This year Ports of Auckland has stepped up with additional funding to ensure the 2010 event continues to provide free attractions for local families.

General Manager Port Services Wayne Mills said Ports of Auckland was pleased to be able to help out, following a request from local Maungakiekie MP Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga.

“While the Port of Onehunga on the Manukau Harbour is of a smaller scale than our city’s Waitemata seaport, it is an important part of the local economy and we appreciate the support we receive from the community,” Mr. Mills said.

“The festival is a great free day of entertainment and fun for families, and we hope to see thousands of our Port neighbours at the event again this year.”

“An important theme of the festival is to provide free entertainment and physical activities for the local community - particularly the younger people,” said Festival committee member and spokesperson Peter Grainger. “This is only possible with the generous support of sponsors such as Ports of Auckland.”

Ports of Auckland will host a stall at the festival where visitors are able to learn more about ships, stevedoring and all aspects of port operations. Children will be able to take a free ride on a giant Ports of Auckland waterslide and the public can also “have a go” on a waka.

The festival also features a performance by the Kapa Haka group from Te Papapa School, along with other local schools.

Ports of Auckland formed a partnership with Te Papapa School in 2009, as part of its participation in the Auckland-wide Ed & Co programme. Ed & Co aims to reduce education inequality within schools by enhancing school governance and management, with businesses providing management expertise and mentoring to school leaders.

The Onehunga Community Festival will be held Saturday 20 March 2010 from 11am to 4pm at the Onehunga Bay Lagoon and park area off Beachcroft Avenue. As well as Ports of Auckland, the festival is funded by Auckland City Council and the Maungakiekie Community board.
