Register For New Zealand’s Best Buns

While Easter may seem a long way off, bakeries around the country are being urged to get in and register now to take part in the Champion Flour Easter Bun Bake Off 2010.

Goodman Fielder’s National Field Sales Manager, Paul Howley, said the country’s only official Easter bun competition will enter its seventh year in 2010. It runs from January to the end of April 2010.

“For the first time in the Bakeoff’s history, the experienced judging panel will crown a North Island and South Island winner, instead of just selecting one winner overall.

“This year, entrants will need to be on top of their game as they tantalise the taste buds of a North Island and South Island-based judging panel, which includes master judge Mike Turlej & experienced Murray Upton in North Island with head judges: Matthew Keys & Warren Taylor in the South Island.

Judges will assess buns for: straight and over crosses; application of the bun glaze; crust colour; symmetry and batching of product; crumb softness; even dispersal of fruit and; a good aromatic flavour.

“As with previous years, in order to be eligible for judging each bakery must use three Champion products, one of which must be either Champion Premix Hot Cross Bun mix or Champion Flour,” Paul said.

To enter the 2010 Bakeoff, bakeries should contact their Champion representative for a registration form, phone 0800 11 0800 or register online at, www.championflour.co.nz.

The North Island and South Island winners of the Easter Bun Bakeoff 2010 will be announced in March.
