Over 10,000 New Zealanders have voted in a poll of movie tastes and the results are in. Video Ezy and Flicks.co.nz asked Kiwis to choose their favourite movie of all time, their favourite New Zealand movie and their most hated movie. The best movie was voted to be perennial favourite The Shawshank Redemption, the uplifting 1994 prison drama based on a short story by Stephen King. James Cameron’s Avatar, riding high on its recent release and having become the highest-grossing film in movie history, came in at second place. Tarantino's Pulp Fiction is New Zealand's third favourite film of all time.

The worst movie, on the other hand, was deemed to be Battlefield Earth. The sci-fi disaster, starring John Travolta, was based on the fiction of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. In second place is George Clooney's incarnation as the caped crusader in 1997's Batman & Robin.

Also in the list of worst films were kiwi comedy-horror Black Sheep and recent hit Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.

1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was voted in the Top 100 list of best films, while Tim Burton’s 2005 version, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, one of the worst.

Once Were Warriorswas chosen as the best New Zealand film. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was in second place, followed by Whale Rider and Geoff Murphy’s classic Goodbye Pork Pie.

Sir Peter Jackson is predictably New Zealand's favourite filmmaker, with eight films on the best of New Zealand list.
