Like your cinema experiences a little more cutting edge? City Gallery Wellington presents a fascinating journey through experimental cinema on April 17 at 2pm.

Taking his inspiration from the exhibition Trans-Form: The Abstract Art of Milan Mrkusich, Auckland curator and artist Andrew Clifford presents a parallel history of abstraction as found in the world of experimental cinema.

Clifford describes experimental and expanded cinema:
“Encompassing metaphysical spaces, alchemical transformations, abstract animation and visual music, expanded cinema is a close cousin to modernist painting and has shared many of the same concerns, especially in the evolution of abstraction.”

Trans-Form: The Abstract Art of Milan Mrkusich is one of City Gallery’s three Festival Season exhibitions, and provides a unique opportunity to experience first hand Milan Mrkusich’s potent use of form, line and colour over four decades of abstract painting. Mrkusich is considered one of New Zealand’s most important living artists.

Although best known as an art critic, and curator at The University of Auckland's Gus Fisher Gallery, Andrew Clifford also has a long history of working with music; producing radio programmes and writing for a range of publications. Naturally, he has a particular interest in the curious ways the worlds of art and music overlap, including the visual music of synaesthetic cinema. He is actively involved in the world of sound art and is a board member of the Audio Foundation.
