Auckland, New Zealand – Tuesday 27th April 2009 . The world’s most inclusive resort company, Club Med today celebrates 60 years in providing a unique holiday concept to millions of holidaymakers around the world.

For 60 years, this French company has been at the forefront of the all inclusive resort holiday in an array of some of the most sought after sun and ski locations around the globe. From its pioneering days of tenting holidays with activities to the now nostalgic ‘bar beads’ concept, Club Med has evolved into a global and highly sophisticated resort company which has retained its leadership position in this market sector and continues to stay a leap ahead of the competition by opening and recreating the holiday experience to meet the ever changing needs and wants of the 21st century holiday maker.

Club Mediterranee – as it was first called - has come a long way since welcoming its first guests to Alcudia Beach in the Balearics in 1950 to a village of 200 tents and its holiday with a difference concept of fun, relaxation and a range of sporting activities. Founder Gerard Blitz based the Club Mediterranee holiday concept on an Olympic Village, focused on sports and recreation, and in its inaugural summer hosted 2,300 guests - with a staggering further 10,000 turned away.

Club Med is above all a unique holiday experience founded in 1950 on the will of two men : Gilbert Trigano (French) and Gérard Blitz (Belgian). "A spirit was born from that idea...The goal of life is to be happy. The place to be happy is here. And the time to be happy is now", Blitz said.

Tahiti in the South Pacific was the next village to open in 1955, soon followed by the first snow resort in Switzerland. Since then Club Med has rapidly expanded to 80 resorts around the world, in both summer and winter settings.

Club Med continues to lead the way in expanding its innovative and stylish holiday resort offering and will later this year open a new ski resort in China on November 13th.

Club Med New Zealand Manager, Kaarin Gaukrodger says that Club Med’s popularity with Kiwis is “reaching an all time high, at a time when holidaymakers are looking for a cost effective holiday where everything is paid for before they leave home.” Kaarin describes Club Med as “the only truly all inclusive holiday where everything is included – airfares, transfers, accommodation, meals, snacks, drinks – alcoholic and non-alcoholic – a wide range of activities, nightly evening entertainment, Kids and Teen Clubs where available.” Kaarin says that amidst economic uncertainty Club Med has provided financial security for families, couple and singles in not having to worry about changing exchange rates or unwelcome surprises at check out. “With certainty in knowing that your holiday, food, beverages and activities are all paid for before you leave home, the only thing to do is relax and enjoy your holiday, which at Club Med can mean doing as much or as little as you like” says Kaarin.
