Momentum building for Youth Week

Momentum building for Youth Week

Momentum is building for Youth Week 2010 which will be launched this Saturday in Whangarei by young people from Te Ora Hou, Northland.

“Our focus this year is connecting young people with their families,” says NZ Aotearoa Adolescent Health and Development National Executive Officer, Trina King.

“Rangatahi Ora, Whanau Ora: connecting young people with their whanau and families is our theme that came from youth group, Te Ora Hou Northland who will be hosting the national launch.”

The young people agreed that family connections are crucial for young people as they contribute to identity, self worth and self esteem.

Their assertion is supported by findings from the Youth 07 report and initial findings from the Youth Connectedness research say Ms King.

“When young people are connected to their whanau and family, they are well and their whanau are well.”

This year Youth Week is launching a special initiative on Facebook, “A message to my moko” gives users the opportunity to send a message to their moko or grandchildren, 50-years into the future.  Young people from the Taiohi Morehu youth group in Wellington will be meeting with Associate Social Development Tariana Turia next week to show her the messages that have been received so far.
